An interview with Liesel
Describe a guy who is probably hopeless with women.
I originally met him online, but connected with him at a party. The first impression was positive. Everyone was in jeans. His shirt had a small hole in it. At the time I thought it was endearing. Once I learned that was the condition of all his clothing, I became frustrated. Every time I wanted us to go somewhere nice, I had to drag him shopping so he’d have something suitable to wear.
He was kind, had an easy smile, and seemed to genuinely care about what I thought and wanted. Falling for him wasn’t too difficult. But I suspected correctly that no one had ever discussed appropriate attire with him for various situations, despite his age of 40+. I made the attempt and was told to not worry about it. I stopped suggesting restaurants that required more than torn jeans and stained t-shirts yet cringed inside when he wore them.
The clothes weren’t the deal-breaker, however. No amount of kindness, no number of backrubs, foot rubs, or hours of brushing my hair could make up for the lack of hygiene. He smiled readily, showing yellowed teeth with food particles caught between. His breath made me shudder, especially after he’d smoked a cigarette or two. He was a 2.5 pack a day smoker, though he promised to quit before we were to get married. When our relationship ended, he hadn’t even cut down at all.
OK. Any parting advice?
Clothes don’t necessarily make the man, but an appropriately dressed man who exercises excellent personal hygiene will make a positive impression over someone who is wearing ripped jeans and stained t-shirts. Taking care of clothing is not a difficult task. Brushing one’s teeth, shaving or trimming facial hair, and combing one’s hair need to be daily habits.
